Malkin Construction Completes Interior Fit-Out For Ventus Networks’ Headquarters in Norwalk
September 29, 2009
STAMFORD, CT – Malkin Construction has completed the interior fit-out of Ventus Networks’ (Ventus) new headquarters in Norden Park, a 630,000-square-foot high-tech office complex at 10 Norden Place in Norwalk, CT, according to Tim Yahn, president of the Stamford-based construction firm.
Ventus provides secure, advanced global fixed-line and wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) telecommunication networks, infrastructure alternatives, hardware manufacturing, data transport, and end-to-end managed services for domestic and international clients.
Formerly part of an industrial building, Ventus’ new office space presented several design challenges for the project team. Conversion to modern office use required coordination with the Norden Park owners to change the infrastructure and building envelope.
Since the original space was poorly lit by sparsely located perimeter windows, the team installed skylights, floor-to-ceiling interior glass walls and corridor sidelights. These improvements help flood interior spaces with natural light that creates an eco-friendly workplace environment. Energy efficiency is also realized through an occupancy sensor system that helps reduce energy consumption.
The central office space is dedicated to state-of-the-art network operations and data centers that operate on a 24-hour basis every day of the year. The Network Operation Center is a tiered, theater-style room with under-the-floor wiring, seating for 25 technical engineers and six large projection screens for security monitoring and client support.
The data center required many upgrades, including those for cooling, fire protection and uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems. Redundant cooling by an under-the-floor air distribution system keeps the data center cool at all times. The dual air conditioning units are programmed to power on if one fails and are switched automatically every week. The fire protection system is integrated, self-contained, and designed to keep data center equipment dry through any emergency. Both centers are visible through bronze windows from work areas on either side. The entire facility is monitored by cameras and password protected access systems.
The Malkin Construction project team included Corporate Design, LLC as the project architect, and C&F Consulting Engineering.
